Discover Our Library

The Talkeetna Public Library is more than a place to borrow books — it's a destination worth exploring. Step outside and you'll find a frisbee disc course winding through the grounds, a peaceful walking trail, a community garden, and an outdoor amphitheater perfect for warm Alaskan evenings. Look closer and you'll discover hidden gems: a stunning stained glass window, a seed catalog, a donor wall honoring the community members who made it all possible, and a beloved fish sculpture that's become a local landmark. Whether you're a first-time visitor or a longtime Talkeetna local, there's always something new to find at your library — inside and out.

Beyond the Books

Children’s Literary Trail

Reading in the Woods

During the summer, there’s a story walk on a winding pathway in the woods. At each reading “station” you’ll find part of a story to read and finish with your children. A collaboration with the Jessica Stevens Community Foundation, books are rotated during the summer to encourage repeat visits.

Suzanne’s Garden

Offering a Respite

A garden bench and small fountain beckon you to take a stroll through local flora or read a book while you wait for your family and friends. The Friends help create and maintain the garden, funded as a legacy to a long-time Talkeetna resident.

Seed Catalog

Supporting Alaskan Gardening

Visit the library to collect free seed packets for a wide variety of herbs, vegetables, and flowers. You’ll get seed starting trays, planting pamphlets, and gardening books for inspiration.

4 Little “Free” Libraries

Providing Community Access to Free Books

As you travel along the Talkeetna Spur Road into Downtown Talkeetna, you’ll find 4 little “free” Library whistle stops along your way:

  • Mat-Su Valley Federal Credit Union—at the “Y”
  • Talkeetna Wildwoods Park & Playground
  • Talkeetna Village Park Pavilion
  • Mountain High Pizza Pie

Teacher’s Shelves

Highlighting School Connections

In the fall, the Friends connect with Talkeetna Elementary teachers, ask them to select their favorite books for their grade, then purchase & feature their “books” prominently in the Children’s section.

Commission Art for the Library

Offering a Local Artist Showcase

Over the years, the Friends send out an Artist Call with an RFP for local artists to fill the library walls.

The Giving Tree

Selecting Your Favorite Books for the Shelves

Twice a year, in February and in November-December, the Friends display their “Giving “Quilt” Tree. Hand stitched by the Friends, library patrons can select a book they would like to donate to the library from the “quilt” tree.
